United Kingdom
The United Kingdom has the sixth-largest economy in the world, and has the second-largest economy in the European Union. As a highly developed, diversified, market-based economy, the UK is a major international trading power. As a leading international financial center, London was impacted by the financial crisis in 2008. In response to the financial crisis, the British Government implemented a wide-ranging stability and recovery plan that included a fiscal stimulus package, bank recapitalization, and credit stimulus schemes. Over 1 million people in the U.K. work in financial services, nearly 4% of total U.K. employment.
