United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates comprises seven emirates, or lands, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain, Ras al-Khaimah and Fujairah. The capital and the largest city of the UAE is Abu Dhabi. Nearly all of the UAE is covered by desert, however, it also boasts a beautiful seascape, and mountainous regions. Unlike other countries in the Gulf Region, the production of oil and petroleum products account for less than 10% of its GDP. Nevertheless, when Abu Dhabi became one of the first Middle Eastern countries to export its oil, the country’s society and economy were transformed. The UAE has one of the highest GDPs per head in the world. While still heavily dependent on revenues from hydrocarbons, the UAE has moved successfully toward economic diversification, large foreign exchange reserves and overseas investments. Having become one of the most popular destinations in the world, its economy is fuelled by tourism. Vast expansion has brought a boom in construction, banking, retail and other service industries, along with an influx of foreign workers. Of the UAE’s more than 8 million residents, less than 20% are Emirati.
